From Tokyo to the Sea by train, bus and taxi
Our family adventure through Japan was one we’ll never forget. We traveled from the buzz of Tokyo to the quiet cliffs of Izu, then on to the temples and winding streets of Kyoto, all by train, bus, and taxi, with the kids in tow and backpacks full of snacks and curiosity.
One of the highlights was our stay in a magical glass house perched 200 feet above the Pacific Ocean. Waking up each morning to that view, wrapped in clouds and light, felt like a dream. The chef from the local restaurant picked us up every evening, driving us through mountain roads to hidden food spots where we tasted the best meals of the trip — warm, generous, and completely local.
In Kyoto, we stayed in a beautifully restored traditional home tucked into a quiet neighborhood. From there, we wandered through temples, found tiny coffee shops and bookstores, and took in the gentle pace of the city. Every detail of this trip was designed around experience, part of a collaboration with Airbnb to find the most soulful and surprising places to stay.
It was the kind of journey that reminded us how much adventure is possible when you travel slow and stay curious, especially with kids.
